"Ultralite"
Lyrics copyright 2001 Polly Moller

I bloom by night like jasmine, send my soul from my body to find you
and where you are and where you've been
'cause my heart fell silent the day you left
The fire between us quenched too soon, a blood-red poppy cut down in its youth
Your sunrise smile fades from my mind
and as the sun goes down, I send my soul from my body to find...

Time passed and I built myself a plane
An Ultralite, 'cause only in flight
can I escape the pain
It's heavier than air and I see it down there.
The view's pristine from this altitude
Discernment from the divine is clear
It's useless to have a heart that yearns
Would the ocean receive me kindly, if I decided not to return?

If I bought you a pen that was perfect
on your birthday, what would you write?
Out of sight and out of mind I float in the burning sky.
That random shiver you feel is mine.
Look up at me, I'm ultralite.

I've never been quite tame, and I grow wilder every day.
You once said I was too distracting--
you forgot that you were in pain.
The sun's rays heat my hair, maybe I'll just evaporate,
and if you find my wings all melted
just play the black box.

"Not Made of Stone"
Lyrics copyright 2004 Polly Moller

Driving through the desert
it's a steely burnished day
Deep Eddy's dressing me up with his eyes
in a miniskirt and biker boots and a bustier
That dead hillside looks like it's moving
but now I see it's covered with pinwheels
I see fractal spirals in the sky

Pupils dilated
Deep Eddy looks right through me
he says, "you're not made of stone.
Theoretically by nature you should be five times as strong as steel.
Somebody cooled you off too fast.
Prince Rupert's drop of tempered glass."

We stopped for gas and had to hurry
the sky was promising to dessicate us where we stood
I added oil and closed the hood
and logged on and typed out, "honey,
you gotta love these modern times.
We lovers can end what's mine and thine
without even hearing each other's voice."

There are drinks so cold they have no taste
and roads so long they lead on by the rusted
bones of old airplanes dissolving in the sun.
I said that will be me someday, after all my pens run dry.
And Deep Eddy replied,
"I've seen a thousand blows bounce off you.
Someone could pound you through a wall, you'd be just fine.
But never let them scratch you
or break a piece off, that's when you will fall to dust explosively.
That's what I see."

"How Now Is Soon"
Lyrics copyright 2001 Polly Moller

Descended from a house of madness
I face the world outside unsure how to proceed.
Cicadas humming tell me, time to spread my wings.
No need to do non-threatening things with my time
or write meaningless lyrics that rhyme.

There's a club and you've got to go;
you could meet somebody who really loves you.
So now lights and sound and chaos surround me
and on the dance floor there you are,
with that boy who wants you bad.
Blinking up at you he tells you what he saw on the news today.
He just wants to get laid, but he says...

"There's a company, put out a patent, on artificial hearts for women. Because they have to be smaller, and stronger? I saw it on TV at the gym. And you know they're gonna make a fortune, 'cause everybody knows all women have had their hearts broken at least twice.

"There's something else I heard somewhere. It's that when women shoot themselves -- it's not usually in the head. Women tend to shoot themselves in the heart? I wonder if that's relevant? But anyway you've got beautiful arms. I bet you work out a lot."

"Blood With Salt"
Lyrics copyright 2002 Polly Moller

On heaven's high plateau
there's a yellow freedom plain
Maybe I'll ask the folks who live there
who it is they think I am
all bandaged up and travelling alone
The peaceful waters of the slough
hold a picture of the yellow spotted hill
It's all right now
'cause I know how to wash out
blood with salt

When only crawling chaos satisfied me
how did I endure each lukewarm day
in that overlit and shallow place
Never were beauty and derangement
so irresistibly combined
than in his mind
and in the smile that lit has face
It's all right now
'cause I know how to wash out
blood with salt

Now that I'm gone
he can finally have me all to himself
'cause I'm just a memory and I won't answer back
Got nowhere else to be but by his side
along for the ride
It's all right now
'cause I know how to wash out
blood with salt

"The Jaguar"
Lyrics copyright 2003 Polly Moller

This old street is full of doorways
with their threshholds where I hide
Your eyes look straight ahead,
you run across against the light.
I guess you wake up every morning,
do the things you've always done,
like a conductor on a train that killed someone the night before.

I want to be the jaguar of your mountains,
and take you up to my dark cave,
open your chest there, and see if you have a heart.

Don't it feel good to face reality?
Lean up against it, it's a concrete wall.
Just now I heard your demons have been working overtime.
That temple waits in silence getting overgrown with vines.
The jaguar knows her way around
and her footsteps make no sound.

"Test Pilot's Lament"
Lyrics copyright 2003 Polly Moller

Here today, gone to Utah
Another needle in my arm to mark the way
Under Nevada's sky there's a tattered flag that flies
I see it in my rear-view
I've got about 4 days.

I'm on the list of local fauna
the birds that drink no water
eye-lidded swimming reptiles invisible underground
What was black is painted white
from the mailbox to the sand
harmless as a minivan escapes the eye

I'll take a rentacar from here
at a sweet slow pace and breathe the air
such simple colors, craggy shapes and naive smiles
Taking time off from my speed
It took some getting used to, looking down
on iridescent cinnamon, white and gray
and seeing prayers
and smears of despair
and that spreading net of rage
over all the sprawl

I'm not like you anymore
I see too fast and fly too high

"The Great Highway"
Lyrics copyright 2003-2004 Polly Moller

Gesture by gesture, piece by piece
the Great Highway assembled me
The fog rolled in to cool me off
I'm quiet waiting for the crowd
all those pairs of eyes
a Beatles bow

Can't figure how
but it doesn't matter why
I have this dream just once a year
You've got a leather jacket on
and it creaks so pleasantly
In the turnout I pull over
there's beach grass there as tall as I
the catcher in the rye

In all the 12 realities
I strain my mind to see
unconscious you beside me
You fell asleep thinking of the future
You're sleeping and it's keeping me awake
the full moon finds me
wakeful and she drenches me with light
I ask her blessing on this night

The Great Highway's got plans for me.

"Suspension"
Lyrics copyright 2004 Polly Moller

Layered whispers form the atmosphere
A silent membrane holds them in
This is where I hang suspended,
crystals forming in my eyes
'cause only here is it cold enough
only here is it dark enough
to see clearly

I took my heart in to that place
where they know how to do these things
I signed a waiver of liability
paid my fee and made my apologies
I followed them into the white room and
watched while they put it to sleep

Afterwards I was either lighter or kind of dizzy and I think
the receptionist said, honey, when you're ready, we have lots
of little ones you can adopt.

Next I bought myself a ticket
and endured some moderate gs
someday they'll build a station here and we can all admire the view
but I am not a tourist
only here can I be sure that my equipment will not fail
There's no pain, 'cause those parts don't feel
but one by one they scream as they're extinguished.

I can tell it's working.
I've forgotten everything you ever told me
and I barely recognize your name
incisions filling in with cold and silence
There’s no danger of infection, and no dust on anything
The monitors shut down and things come off with velcro sounds
If thy limbic system offend thee, pluck it out.

"Death and the Maiden"
Lyrics copyright 1999 Polly Moller

I've got the stares this morning thinking about you
I know where you are and where to find you
My father showed you to me
He even said that I could touch you

All the light in a room rushes toward you
A sound of wind from somewhere in my head
before an authoritative sound
united with your clip a snap secure
I can confront them all today
with a piercing secret smile
knowing that you're with me
they can't hurt me anymore
they can't hurt me anymore

I don't think she knew what she was doing when she taught me how to walk this way

Small steps in a tiny circle
bright jewelled eyes in a placid face
white spotless gloves and shiny shoes
feet together, shoulders back

They don't really say those things about you
They don't really write those things about you
They don't really chase you, you made that up
They never pulled your hair, you made that up
When they say those things they are looking for a reaction
Just ignore them and they'll go away
They'll keep doing those things if you fight back
Just ignore them and they'll go away

No one else will ever laugh while they hold me underwater
No one else will ever laugh while they hold me underwater
The world will stop for me and flow confused
tingling past my fingers
Divine Wisdom, mine to bestow
and all their hearts' drumbeats united in silence
